What a phenomenally inspiring win by Rory McIlory in the US PGA Championship this weekend. He really is an exciting young player to watch and we hope that you all managed to keep your eyes open long enough to get some work done yesterday! We held our own PGA Gland Slam Trophy competition on Saturday and congratulations to Shingi Shumba who won this with a score of 43 points. That marks the final Grand Slam Trophy event of the year and so the next step will be to gather the winners from the four majors together to determine the winner for 2012. Watch this space.
|It may have been one of the coldest days in a long time, but last week Tuesday our members and fellow golfers showed that not even snow could keep them away from giving back. As you all know, we hosted a charity golf day for one of our members' daughters. Skye Bennett lost her hearing in February this year after a viral ear infection. A full field of golfers braved the cold – and the snow, of all things - in support of this cause. We are still busy finalising the money that was raised but one thing is for certain; every player's heart was definitely warm. A huge thank you goes out to everyone that participated! |
Last week Wednesday we had our Castle Lite Handicap Challenge and congratulations go to Wimpie Vos, Tertius Horak, George Reed, Herman du Plessis and Werner van Wyk who all broke their handicaps. If you would like to win a case of Castle Lite, then join us next month - 12th of September!
Thank you to all the teams that braved the cold weather for our TaylorMade Company Challenge. Well done to Die Bulle who won with a stagering 84 points. |On behalf of the staff and members of Zwartkop, we would like to express our condolences to the Titans Cricketers and to the friends and family of Elize Lombard, the CEO of the Northerns Cricket Union who died last week Thursday of a heart attack. You will be missed Elize – RIP.|

|Pilates at Zwartkop Country Club!|
We are very excited to announce that we now have Pilates on offer in the clubhouse! Lorraine de Wet is a resident on the Zwartkop Golf Estate and she has started classes in the evenings. For those of you that don’t know, Pilates is a system of exercise developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 1900s. It is a highly sophisticated approach to training the body that seeks to develop core strength and stability (rather than muscular bulk) in order to allow the body to move in the most efficient way possible.
The Pilates method is a safe, no-impact exercise routine that stretches, lengthens and exercises all the major muscle groups in a logical sequence without neglecting the smaller, weaker muscles. Awareness of breathing and precise control of movements are integral components of Pilates.

It is the best exercise for ALL sports persons, including golfers, to help improve your game and the benefits include: toning and body alignment, improved posture, core strengthening and coordination, balance and movement, endurance and overall fitness and stress release. • Jannie and his team started sodding yesterday and the cart path at the 9th green on the right is also finished. They are also busy digging out some of the silt in the river in front of the 12th.

My highlight of the week had to be both Caster Semenya getting silver and the Jamaicans breaking the world record for the men's 4x100m. On the other hand, the lowlight for Brian had to be the Stormers losing to the Sharks once again - nice one Brian, Don and the other losers! Well done to Rory for demolishing the rest of the field at the PGA by 8 shots. At the tender age of 23, will this guy be the next Woods, or better?
This week will be Shoe Week here at Zwartkop Golf Shop. Bring in your old pair of golf shoes and receive R100 trade in assistance. All our shoes will also be at less 25%. If you are in the market for a new pair then don't miss out!

Golf and Nutrition
Golf and Nutrition are not two words that one would normally use in the same sentence, but they do have more in common than most would think.
The Top Three Nutrition Tips for Improving Performance on the golf course:
|1. Eat Before You Play |
If you have an early morning round, do not skip breakfast. Without breakfast, your blood sugar levels can drop, which will leave you irritable and tired as the rounds wears on.
2. Drink Enough Water
By the time you feel thirsty, you are already dehydrated. Drink water before, during, and after every round of golf.
3. Avoid High-Fat and High-Sugar Foods at the Course
Choose healthy foods or pack in an energy bar, bottled water, dried fruit, or lean biltong in your bag to get you through your game.
